Energy Savings Review For Newsweek's 2011 Top Five Greenest Companies
The amounts and types of "corporate responsibility" data reported by large corporations typically emphasize energy, recycling, and water savings. Several offer an "investment" snapshot in the form of total corporate donations (cash, grants, products, services, technology, etc.). For example, IBM increased donations to $189.2 million for the tenth consecutive year (2010), while Baxter International (through its foundation) provided approximately $80.0 million. Other companies (such as Sprint-Nextel) encourage employees to participate in charitable giving campaigns for specific causes such as hunger relief.
Most of Newsweek's 2011 Greenest Companies provide corporate responsibility information, although formats and "measurements" vary in each presentation. The following table summarizes estimated dollar amounts for energy reductions achieved by Newsweek's 2011 Top Five Greenest Companies. A few companies evaluate energy accomplishments in percentages. For example, H-P reduced overall energy use by 3.0% in 2010, while Sprint-Nextel reported a 3.6% reduction in total energy use from 2008 through 2010.
