Feedback Research Services Estimates A $100+ Million U.S. Market For Cardiac, Full Body, and Other Health Scans in 2001

July 24, 2001 (Jacksonville, OR): Patients continue to pay hundreds of dollars for preventive health scans, driving revenues in an increasingly important segment of the diagnostic imaging market. Surveys conducted by Feedback Research with several leading diagnostic imaging facilities during May and June substantiate ongoing patient demand for these services. Most facilities provide appointments within 2 - 3 days, but a few are booked several weeks in advance, despite the fact that pricing and scanning options are fairly consistent from facility to facility.

Cardiac scanning is one of the more commonly sought procedures, whether initiated by patients or as the result of physician referrals. A non-invasive test that costs $450.00 and only takes 30 minutes of time seems like a good idea to many people who worry about the risk of having a heart attack. There’s no consensus within the medical community yet, but cardiac screening is generally viewed in a favorable light for patients with a family history of disease or symptoms. For full body scanning, concerns have been raised about excessive radiation dosages and appropriateness of promoting this technology to the general public.

Based on responses about service volumes from scanning facilities identified to date, Feedback Research Services estimates that U.S. cardiac and other health scanning service revenues could reach $100.0 million or more by year-end. Computed tomography (CT) and electron beam tomography (EBT) equipment manufacturers are also benefiting, as scanning facilities supplement sales to traditional hospital and medical center customers.
