APRIL 1999 PRESS RELEASE
1999 Telemedicine Speaker-Of-The-Year Award
Jacksonville, OR (April 12th, 1999): In recognition of two thought-provoking presentations made during 1998, Feedback Research Services (Feed-back.com) has selected Doug Perednia, M.D., as this year’s Telemedicine Speaker-Of-The-Year. The two topics of Dr. Perednia’s talks were: "Regional Planning For Telemedicine" and "Telemedicine As An Underdeveloped Country." The first speech described the disturbing phenomenon of "geographic mismatch", underscoring the lack of access to specialists (such as cardiologists and endocrinologists) for residents in Eastern Oregon. In his second talk, Dr. Perednia identified demographic, economic, and social trends that illustrate the types of barriers encountered by developing countries and the telemedicine market.
As President of the Association Of Telemedicine Service Providers (ATSP; Portland OR), Dr. Perednia is concerned with more widespread establishment of telemedicine to supplement existing methods of delivering medical care. While there are many high-profile leaders within the industry, Dr. Perednia continues to advocate for greater publicity for telemedicine: "This type of work isn’t glamorous, and it seems to take forever to see progress. One of the best ways to grow an industry is to build a market for its services."
A full description of the 1999 Telemedicine Speaker-Of-The-Year award appears in two publications from Feedback Research Services. On the Web, the April 1999 issue of "TeleMed-E-Zine" includes an introduction to Dr. Perednia, along with highlights from his two talks. The April 1999 issue of the "Strategic Briefings In Telemedicine" newsletter (a print publication) covers the same information, as well as an additional 12 pages analyzing the potential market impact of telehealth on diabetes and other chronic illnesses. It is fitting that Dr. Perednia’s award is announced in this issue, since he believes that telemedicine will be especially important in the home care and diabetes segments.
