SEPTEMBER 1998 PRESS RELEASE

World Diabetes Self-Care Market To Reach $7.6 Billion in 1998

Jacksonville, OR (September 15, 1998): As increased numbers of diabetics are diagnosed, health care providers are implementing aggressive testing and monitoring strategies. Individuals with diabetes are being encouraged to develop more stringent self-care routines through “care management” programs, which emphasize good blood glucose control practices as well as annual eye and foot check-ups to detect or prevent medical complications. All these factors contribute to a growing market for diabetes drugs and monitoring supplies.

A new report from Feedback Research Services entitled Diabetes Care Markets describes revenues and growth rates for self-testing and self-treatment products from 1993 through 2003. Emerging care strategies using disease management, Internet, telehealth, telemedicine, and telephone triage systems are also discussed, along with examples of leading health care provider organizations that are demonstrating favorable preliminary results. These new approaches are expected to impact existing markets, and early data from selected pilot projects indicate that care management can improve patient compliance with examination and treatment regimens, while also reducing reliance upon emergency services or hospitalization.
