AUGUST 1997 PRESS RELEASE

Telemedicine Delivery of Mental Health Services

Jacksonville, Oregon (August 20, 1997): In general and psychiatric hospitals and other mental health organizations, telemedicine networks are being expanded to provide support services and telepsychiatry. In rural areas, telemedicine-mediated communication can be especially important when there are serious shortages of psychiatrists and other medical professionals who specialize in mental health.

For individuals who have been hospitalized, geographical barriers can hinder participation of family members in discharge plans. Videoconferencing eliminates long-distance travel and also facilitates coordination between treating physicians and community-based doctors to ensure adequate follow-up for the patient.

An analysis of these and other factors is included in U.S. Mental Health Telemedicine from Feedback Research Services. Literature, interview, and survey sources were used to assess administration, implementation, and ongoing support of mental health telemedicine services. The contents represent 200 hours of research, with this 50-page report.
