Aesthetic Markets
According to material promoting the THE Aesthetic Show, the aesthetic medicine market generated $25.0 billion in 2007.[1] The conference's 2007 keynote presentation cited examples of the kinds of procedures that are expected to support continued growth, such as: Body Shaping, Fillers, Skin Rejuvenation, and Skin Tightening.
Demographic Trends
In the September 2007 edition of Touchstone Investments' Viewpoint, a conservative estimate suggested that the U.S. aesthetic medicine market is growing 10% annually. Growth is largely attributed to baby boomers.[2] An article published by U.S. News & World Report, however, suggests that individuals between 19 and 35 years of age (mostly women) are creating a substantial portion of demand for BOTOX® and Restylane® (208,000 injections in 2007).[3]
Equipment & Products
The global market for aesthetic lasers is expected to grow from approximately $750 million in 2006 to $1.1 billion in 2009.[4] A report published by Global Industry Analysts in 2008 forecasts a worldwide skin care product market that will generate revenues of $44.8 billion in 2010. Currently, the largest regional markets are Japan, the United States, and Western Europe. Countries such as China and Brazil are expected to drive future growth.
Procedures & Services
As cited in a recent New York Times article, 9.6 million non-surgical treatments were performed in the United States in 2007 (American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery). Approximately 12.8% of the total consisted of BOTOX® injections (2.8 million).[5] In 2007, BOTOX® generated revenues of $1.21 billion for Allegan Inc. (Irvine CA). Despite development and introduction of new products (e.g., Medicis Pharmaceutical's Reloxin), analysts forecast strong growth (13% to 16%) for BOTOX® in 2008.[6]
